Local Gullah Icon will be Missed

Captain Joseph ‘Crip’ Legree was a well-known, highly respected Gullah netmaker on St Helena Island, SC.  Captain Legree’s cotton nets were sought after and it was a special treat to see him work on a net during demonstrations.  Whenever possible Captain Legree ppartucipated in Gullah  festivals and events to showcase his skill. The skill of netmaking in the Gullah tradition is not done by many and a master netmaker is now gone.  He will be greatly missed.
