Life is But a Vapor

During the holiday season from Thanksgiving to the New Year so much goes on.  Plans are made to receive family and friends and to share the reasons for those special occasions.  There is the anticipation of traveling or welcoming loved ones in our home.  The menu is made, shopping done, cleaning and straightening, decorating and cooking.  All of this takes place during the normal holiday season but there are some preparations that come without welcome; a death in the family or of a friend.  Family members and friends will still gather but the purpose is different.

Redeem the time!

Redeem the time!

From just before Thanksgiving to the New Year we have received news of the death of someone we know or close to someone. Receiving the news serves as a reminder of how fragile life is and that we should number our days. In the bible our lives are compared to vapor that disappears quickly, flowers that fade and grass that withers. Life is on earth among our family and friends, co-workers and classmates, neighbors and acquaintances even those we don’t yet know, is temporary and fleeting. We are told in Ephesians 5:15 “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. 20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

We are to pray for families who have recently lost a loved one, planned and attended a wake, funeral and burial, received family and friends. They have so much to take care of during a period of grieving. Father give comfort and peace, strength and compassion.  May we be your hands and feet to those around us and good stewards of the wonderful life You have given.    May we share the gospel in love to those around us.  Of course many have heard and think the gospel is too narrow and they are right but it is the greatest rescue plan ever made and the greatest act of love. Matthew 7: 13 “You can enter true life only through the narrow gate. The gate to hell is very wide, and there is plenty of room on the road that leads there. Many people go that way. 14 But the gate that opens the way to true life is narrow. And the road that leads there is hard to follow. Only a few people find it”.

John  14:1“Do not let your heart be troubled. You have put your trust in God, put your trust in Me also. 2 There are many rooms in My Father’s house. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going away to make a place for you. 3 After I go and make a place for you, I will come back and take you with Me. Then you may be where I am. 4 You know where I am going and you know how to get there.”5 Thomas said to Jesus, “Lord, we do not know where You are going. How can we know the way to get there?” 6 Jesus said, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one can go to the Father except by Me.

Jeremiah 31:3 “ The Lord came to us from far away, saying, “I have loved you with a love that lasts forever. So I have helped you come to Me with loving-kindness”. This is the greatest story of love and sacrifice ever, let us tell it passionately.
