Our Chickens at the Fair

The Orangeburg County Fair began Monday, September 30.  There is no longer a Beaufort County Fair so our 4-H members travel to nearby counties to participate in competitions or displays of their skills and projects.  The extension 4-H directors selected the Orangeburg County Fair as the venue for our 4-H ivestock competitions.  There is also an open livestock competition that can be entered BH the general public called “Feather and Fur.  Animals entered in this publix competition mjsg be at the fair in the livestock barn for the week on display for the publix.  These animals Ade judged Mk day night when they receive a sticker and or ribbons if they place  in the competition.  .

This year we took eleven chickens to the fair last Saturday morning.  They were blood tested for possible diseases, tagged and if given a clan bill of health, allowed to stay at the barn.  The judges are local experts or knowledgeable livestock, k in our case chicken  owners who then judge each bird based on the characteristics of the breed.

All of our chickens placed.  We received best pair of the fair for the rooster  and Ben Dominiques.  All the others placed first or second.  We are very happy that our birds received  such  high marks.
